Eighteen-year-old Arsa lives at the edge of the world. The island she loves and has always lived on is a natural reserve, and her job is to collect the trash that the sea has washed up. Inspired by her father’s sculptures, Arsa remodels the objects that she finds, giving them a new life. Her days pass in a time suspended between her universe of monsters and statues lost on the seabed, and humanity that she stares at from afar. Between 9 May and 11 June 1943, the island of Pantelleria was violently bombarded by the Allied troops in the first operation to reconquer Italian soil. Residents recall that, after the surrender, some of the buildings were blown up for the cameras of a propaganda combat film. Welcome Palermo takes its title from a random street mural that greets anyone who arrives in the city from the airport. It embodies a dystopian welcome message that sets the city itself as the protagonist, and not just as a simple landscape.

The video installation in the Archivio di Stato di Palermo (State Archives of Palermo) is inspired by the vicissitudes of the film director Vittorio De Seta.
